IMPORTANT
INFORMATION

WSVM AM-1490 - (828) 874-0000.While not a business in the retail sense, WSVM (Wireless Serving Valdese & Morganton) serves Valdese with talk shows, news, weather, church services, a "swap shop," music (currently 50s, 60s, & 70s,) and East Burke High School football and basketball games. The station also provides live coverage of local events, such as the annual Waldensian Festival, the Drexel Fair, Rutherford College Day, and local parades. WSVM is channel 1490 on the AM dial.

Since its first transmission on October 6, 1961, WSVM has seen several changes in ownership and format, from "Middle of the Road," a format designed to appeal to all audiences, to country-western, to the oldies featured today, the station has made an effort to keep current with listener tastes and preferences.

The station has been instrumental in bringing information to citizens in times of crisis. During the forest fire that posed a serious threat to the town in 1985, the station provided updates on the progress of the blaze as well as the efforts to control it.  From fire, to rain - with the onslaught of Hurricane Hugo in 1989 - and snow with the "blizzard" of 1993, WSVM has been a vital part of the community.
