THE (REAL) VALDESE NEWSOn December 8, 1938, the first issue of The Valdese News rolled off the presses, featuring articles on the new community center and the election results: J.D. Brinkley as Mayor and Earl B. Searcy elected to the Burke County Board of Education. What first began as a column by Cole Savage entitled "News of the Week in Valdese" soon grew into a full page entitled "Valdese News of the Week." The growth from a small article into a full, independent paper seemed to serve as a touchstone in Valdese's evolution. It was no longer a suburb of Morganton, but a town notable for its own stories. Thus the paper's subtitle would read, "A Live Newspaper in a Progressive Town." It would receive much praise from area newspapers such as the Charlotte Observer and Hickory Daily Record. Though now out of publication, an extensive library of back issues is preserved and available for viewing at the Waldensian Museum.
