Beginning on August 30, 1984 as an extension of the Burke Arts Council's Jailhouse Gallery, the Rock School Arts Foundation was originally located in the Valdese Town Hall. When the Old Rock School was reopened, however, "Jailhouse Gallery East" relocated there in 1987, establishing the Rock School Art Gallery. The Organizational Committee then separated from the Burke Arts Council and became the Rock School Arts Foundation, focusing primarily on the eastern part of the county. Upon moving into the Old Rock School, the RSAF expanded its offerings to include a wider variety of art, such as painting, sculpture, pottery, fabrics, and crafts, and began instruction in visual art with special emphasis on younger students. The foundation sponsors several shows a year in the gallery, including the annual Open Competition - held during and after the Waldensian Festival - and the Eastern Burke County Schools Exhibition, typically held in May. In addition to the Gallery shows, the primary goal of the Foundation is children's education. Workshops held by the RSAF led by local artists such as Jackie Deaton and Jenny Mastin have produced many fine young artists and inspired many more.
